What is an IDP/IDL?

An IDL (International Driver’s License) or IDP (International Driving Permit) or are the same term for a set of documents that translates your driver’s license into 12 languages which you need to legally drive in many foreign countries.

Do I need an International Driver's License in Australia?

What are the requirements for driving in Australia?

In order to drive legally in Australia – the following is required:
 
1. Current Driver’s License: You need a current and up to date driver’s license from your home country. An International Driver’s License (IDL) to serve as a translation is also required. While certain states may accept a foreign driver’s license without the need for an International Driver’s Permit, it is highly recommended that you have both.
 
2. Age Minimums: The legal driving age in Australia for a full non-provisional license is 18. Certain states allow drivers under the age of 18 to drive with restrictions. Rental car companies will often set a minimum age of 21.
 
3. Insurance: Auto collision and accident insurance is required and specific coverage needs are different in each state. Rental insurance coverage is highly recommended.

What are the International Driver's Permit Categories?

All International Driver’s License follow the A-E category format that allow others to understand which vehicles you are licensed to drive:
 
A – Motorcycles: Includes motor scooters and motorcycles
 
B – Cars: All passenger (less than 8 seats) vehicles.
 
C – Large Vehicles: Trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles.
 
D – Buses: Vehicles with more than 8 seats
 
E – Trailers: Used in addition to any of the categories above.

What is the difference between the digital International Driver's License and the physical version?

Every International Driving Permit order includes a digital copy that can be accessed online or saved to your phone. When possible – bring the physical copy of your International Driver’s License. In certain cases, car rental and local authorities will accept a digital copy in lieu of the original copy. A physical copy is often used by those who are already in transit to their destination and need access to their International Driver’s Permit immediately.

Certain states in Australia will waive the testing requirements depending on your home country if you have a valid license and International Driver’s Permit.

  • People drive on the left side of the road.
  • Australia does have a national seat belt law. We recommend always wearing a seat belt if it is available.
  • Australia does have a national law prohibiting mobile phone use while driving. Using a hands-free device is permitted.
  • Australia does have a national law requiring the use of helmets when on motorcycle or scooter. This applies to both drivers and passengers. Child passengers under the age of 8 are not allowed.
  • Legal Blood Alcohol Content Level: 0.05%. Do not drink and drive.
  • The maximum driving speed is 50 km/h (31 miles/hour) in urban areas and 100-130 km/h (62-80 miles/hour) in rural areas.
