What is an IDL/IDP?
Both IDL and IDP are similar terms (International Driving License and International Driving Permit) that are used to describe the documents that translate your local license allowing you drive legally while abroad. They are also known as an International Driver’s License or International Driver’s Permit
Belgium Traffic Laws
- People drive on the right side of the road.
- The minimum age to drive a car is 18 years old. The minimum age to rent a car is 21 years old.
- Belgium does have a national seat belt law. We recommend always wearing a seat belt if it is available.
- Belgium does have a national law prohibiting mobile phone use while driving. Using a hands-free device is permitted.
- Belgium does have a national law requiring the use of helmets when on motorcycle or scooter. This applies to both drivers and passengers. Child passengers Restrictions vary depending on the type of motorcycles: children under 3 years are not allowed on mopeds and motorcycles, children under 8 years are not allowed on motorcycles over 125cc
- Legal Blood Alcohol Content Level: 0.05%. Do not drink and drive.
- The maximum driving speed is 50 km/h (31 miles/hour) in urban areas and 90 km/h (55 miles/hour) in rural areas. The 90 km/h (55 miles/hour) speed limit applies in rural areas in Brussels capital region and Wallon region while there is a 70 km/h (43 miles/hour) speed limit in the Flemish region.
