What is an IDL/IDP?
Multiple terms can be used (IDL – International Driver’s License and IDP – International Driver’s Permit) to describe the documents that provide multi-language translations of your driver’s license allowing you to drive legally while traveling internationally.
They are often also referred to as an International Driving Permit or International Driving License.
Does Italy require an International Driver's License?
Yes, in Italy, an International Driving Permit is required for non-EU residents who want to drive with a non-European Union driver’s license.
An International Driving License functions as a translation of your original driver’s license and should be carried with your valid driver’s license from your home country.
Can anyone apply? Do I need to be an Italian citizen?
All nationalities are able to apply for an International Driver’s License. The only requirement is the current possession of a valid driver’s license. During your application you will be asked to upload a recent headshot (how to submit headshot for your IDP/IDL) and driver’s license. Specific citizenship (including Italian citizenship) is not a requirement.
Is my International Driver's License valid in Italy?
Yes! Italy is part of a list of over 175 countries that allow international visitors to drive legally using an International Driving Permit.
Are there any other requirements to drive in Italy?
Legal driving requirements in Italy include:
1. Possession of Driving License: Holding a valid and current driver’s license from your home country is mandatory. Furthermore, an International Driver’s License (IDL)is that provides a translation is also required. Using an International Driving Permit is allowed for periods less than 12 months. Beyond this period, drivers must obtain a local license.
2. Age Restrictions: For most vehicles (including cars and motorcycles), the minimum driving age is 18. Certain mopeds can be driven by drivers as young as 16 years of age. While the legal age to drive is 18, most car rental places will set their own minimum age of 21.
3. Insurance Coverage: Valid insurance coverage is mandatory for driving in Italy. While some visitors from EU states can use insurance coverage from back home, this does not cover every country. Please work with your rental agency or credit card provider to source insurance for any vehicles you plan to drive while in Italy
4. Traffic Laws – A brief list of traffic laws and regulations can be found below.

Each International Driver’s License follows the A-E category system, which defines the types of vehicles you are authorized to drive.
A – Motorcycles: This category covers motorcycles of all engine sizes, including mopeds and sidecars.
B – Cars: The B category includes passenger vehicles with a maximum seating capacity of eight people. This typically encompasses regular cars, SUVs, and vans designed for personal transportation.
C – Large Vehicles: This category is for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and other large commercial vehicles.
D – Buses: The D category applies to vehicles designed to carry more than eight passengers, such as buses.
E – Trailers: The E category is used in conjunction with any of the above categories. It indicates that the license holder is allowed to tow trailers or other attachments, provided they fall within the appropriate weight and size limits for the vehicle category.

Every processed application of an International Driving License includes a digital version accessible online or downloadable to your mobile device. Whenever possible, it’s recommended to carry the physical copy of your International Driving License. When necessary, the digital copy can be presented to local authorities and car rental companies. Travelers in route to their next destination often rely on the digital copy for immediate access to their International Driver’s License if they did not bring their original copy with them or are waiting for it to arrive.

Purchasing a vehicle with an International Driving License
Possession of an International Driver’s License is not obligatory when purchasing a vehicle. The key prerequisite for buying a vehicle is a valid form of identification. While your IDL enables you to drive legally in foreign countries, it is not regarded as a standalone document; rather, it complements another form of identification (such as your home license or passport).
How to apply for an International Driver's License with an expired license.
An International Driver’s Permit functions as a translation of your current driver’s license. While you have the option to apply for one with an expired license, it’s recommended to renew your home license at the earliest opportunity.
How to convert your International Driver's License into a local license?
The Italian department of motor vehicles (Motorizzazione Civile) will not allow an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) to be converted into an Italian driver’s license. An IDP is a supplementary document that translates your existing driver’s license into multiple languages, making it easier for you to drive in foreign countries. It does not replace or serve as a local driver’s license.
If you plan to reside in Italy long-term and wish to obtain a local driver’s license, you will typically need to go through the process of passing a written and practical driving test, submitting required documents, and possibly attending driving courses.
